The Archives of Environmental Protection and Water Management keeps the records of the bodies which are under the control of the minister responsible for the water management. The Archives bears an important role in preserving the documents created through the past of the Hungarian water management and environmental protection. Furthermore the Archives of Environmental Protection and Water Management processes these records and makes them researchable.
The legal, structural and functional conditions of the Archives were sat by the 26.167/1977. IX. order of the Ministry of Culture, thus the institution was opened in 1977 under the name of National Archives of Water Management. The change of the name of the Archives was disposed by the 30 article of the Act CXX of 2003. Apart from the approximately 6500 linear meters of records, the Archives preserves, the 4500 pieces academic paper library of the Water Authorities, as well as the14000 items map and 28000 design collections.
